MY DATA, YOUR DATA? CLARITY WITH INDUSTRIAL DATA SPACE

Clarifying, complying with and securing the ownership of data is one of the conditions for having a sustainable and viable digital economy. Whereas the question of who owns which goods is not really an issue in the material world anymore, the perception of the term ownership has not yet been fully developed in the digital world.

In this context, Dr.-Ing. Robert Bauer, Chairman of the Board at SICK AG and member of the Industrial Data Association, and Prof. Dr.-Ing Boris Otto, Manager of the Industrial Data Space research project at Fraunhofer IML Dortmund, are calling for the establishment of globally accepted conditions for owning, possessing and exchanging data. Only then can an efficient digital ecosystem be implemented.

The comparison between the material world and the immaterial data world shows that the legal terms defining ownership and possession should apply analogically. Industrial Data Space could form the basis for an open, generally accepted technical procedure for all data transactions, explain Dr. Bauer and Prof. Otto: “Building up such a level of trust and the additional term “Made in EU” could not only substantially support global exchange and the subsequent growth for future data-operated business models, but could also support a simple added value in broader terms as an enabler for the economy.”
